You might have noticed a little gap in our daily flow. Ft. Lauderdale was calling, so we went to see Ami Givertz (here’s a bigger picture) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. From California, it takes a day to get there and a day to get back. He premiered his new endeavor, The Brown Bag Recruiter, on Thursday.

Ft. Lauderdale is the northern end of the sprawling Miami MSA. The Census Bureau ranked the area 7th in population centers in 2005. On it’s own, Ft. Lauderdale is the 36th largest city in the US. Rankings of population centers vary, but Ft. Lauderdale is definitely a big place.

The Brown Bag Recruiter series picks up where the Recruiting Roadshow leaves off. Ami has built an offering that starts with a half day session and evolves to a regular set of network meetings. (Here’s the event itself and here’s the session binder). Take a look at the event, Ami is a natural trainer.

Using the core website as a font of resources, Ami intends to build a self-reliant recruiting network in Ft. Lauderdale.

That evening, Jason Davis and RecruitingBlogs sponsored a networking get together in a Greek belly-dancing disco. Among the attendees were Recruitnik (Nikki Gordon) and her husband Steve (from Everytime I encounter someone from Jobing, my estimation grows.

The scene was intense. Periodically, the intense bonding of recruiters getting to know each other was interrupted by an explosion of light and sound. All of the waiters and waitresses jumped up on the tables to do various impressions of traditional greek belly dancing. Strobes, sirens and techno gave a 21st Century backdrop.

Ft. Lauderdale is a culture all its own. As we have been discovering, each city in the United States has a unique character based on ethnic mix, core industry, geography, climate, density, cost of living, airline services, relative degree of wired infrastructure and so on. So far, Ft. Lauderdale is the most effectively integrated city in our survey.

Keep your eye on Ami and his projects. Brown Bag Recruiter just might be coming to a city near you.
