Knowing our own little world really well can get in the way of seeing new ideas. Even though there is truth in the “best of type” idea, seeing the whole picture is more important right now.

If you write regularly, have people writing regularly for you or otherwise have to communicate, you’ll want to know about the UP-Goer Five Text Editor. It’s a tool that helps you to communicate using only the 1,000 most popular words in the English language. In other words, it forces you to write so that anyone can understand you.

It’s worth taking the time to practice.

Today’s piece is my attempt to describe the issues associated with getting useful stuff out of software so that real analysis can be done.

Can you tell your story using only the ten hundred most used words?

Some of the most important ideas are hidden under words that people do not often use. Because they are not usual, people may not understand them. Meaning is clearer when you don’t use those words.

A thing that tracks people who want jobs (an ATS) is hard to understand when it does other things. The more other things it does, the harder to understand. Today, these things that track people who want jobs do a lot of things besides their most important job. They should probably be called something else.

Let’s say that you want to understand more about the people who work with you. Sometimes, that’s just a few people. Sometimes, it’s a whole lot of them.

In the part of your work group that manages things about people, there are a lot of things like the ATS. They are used to manage pay, learning, getting work done, and other things. They are not very good at talking to each other.

This is because each of the these other things call the same bits of stuff by different names. Or, sometimes the same stuff is entered wrong because it is entered many times by hand. Whatever the reason, it is hard to understand things that come from two different places.

There are three ways to fix the problem.

Many of the people who make all of the different kinds of things like an ATS want the answer to be that we agree on one way of doing things. That would really help by having the same thing called the same thing in all places. It’s a good idea but it has been very hard to get this idea to work. Everyone wants their way to be the right way. These people want a “best of type” answer.

Another way to fix the problem is to have all of the things like an ATS talk to one place that decides what things mean. This allows everyone to continue doing it their way. It stops the need for everyone to agree. The bad news is that everyone keeps making their way of doing things better. It takes a lot of money to keep the one place that decides what people mean up to date. Another way of saying that is “the place that decides what things mean is always wrong”. These people want a “one way of talking” answer.

The third way to fix the problem is by making one place that does everything. This single place idea is really good at making things mean the same. That’s because the single place doesn’t need to make two different things mean the same. To do things this way means that you can not add stuff from other places. The entire single place has to be made using the same meaning for things. These people want a “single place” answer.

When you have a team that is writing a “single place”, their work goes faster because they all call the same thing by the same name. The problem of different names just goes away.

The people who think that their “best of type” answers are the right way don’t like this approach. They say that to be really great you have to do only one thing. And, you have to do it really well. They think that a “single place” can not give interesting answers to the areas they know a lot about.

There are some groups who are really working hard on the “single place” idea. They think that any new ideas about making work better can only come when there is only one place and only one way of saying a thing. They believe that the “best of type” way stops new ideas from forming. To them, you can never see the big picture when you only look at one piece.

It’s not a new question. The conversation moves between the two sides over the course of years. In today’s world, it’s the time of the “single place” approach.

The really-good-at-one-thing approach has been the big idea for the past 20 years. As the “single place” approach grows, it will build on the work of “best of type” ideas. That’s how things work.

The drive to have “single place” approaches comes from the need to better see the big picture. Most stories about what’s coming focus on the use of numbers to put things together. It is much easier to do this with fewer single places to work with.

The new ideas that are ready to be found can only be found when we are able to look outside of the areas we live in. Knowing our own little world really well can get in the way of seeing new ideas. Even though there is truth in the “best of type” idea, seeing the whole picture is more important right now.
