Stop the Innovation

“I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.”― E.B. White

Stop with the dramatic calls for transformation please. Can we at least put it on hold for a minute?Freak Out

Is there something that needs changing because it isn’t working or would be a really great improvement?  If not, then it’s just change for the sake of change. Nobody is actually calling it change though, because change is scary and hard. So they call it innovation, or transformation, or disruption, or sometimes just new. But none of those is really worth it unless you actually a better way of doing things.

Most of us are completely burnt out on change right now. We get daily software updates, pitches for the latest app, and bombarded with ads for the magical product that will make us more healthy, beautiful, well-adjusted, smarter, better-rested, and might even get us laid.

Lovely. But what if you found a way to be happy now? What if we spent less time figuring out ways to change things and more time focusing on what works?

I’m not against change. Well, sometimes I am because it’s scary and hard. But it’s also inevitable, and an important part of our lives. What I’m questioning is whether all this innovation and transformation is actually doing anything useful, or whether it’s just more compulsion for the Cult of Busy.

So before you set out to transform something ask yourself:

Why am I doing this?

If you’re not sure, then spend some time focusing on what is working really well and figure out how to do more of it.
