We continue our coverage of The HRExaminer 2020 Watchlist today with the second of twelve organizational profiles. The entire list of organizations appearing on this year’s Watchlist can be seen on our introductory Watchlist post located here. Each of the twelve companies we’ve selected this year represent a different value proposition and core functionality across the entire spectrum of the industry.

These outfits are pushing the boundaries out. Individually, they each have a specific value proposition that was not conceivable even three years ago.

Company Description

Textio delivers augmented writing. With its first implementation as a bias reducer in job ad creation, the company started down the road to understanding the meaning of the words you use. The simple concept, that what you say may mean something other than you intend, is at the heart of the product.

They’ve built an intelligent tools engine that examines language, compares it to its impact, and recommends alternatives to improve you desired outcome. From individual coaching to an automated assessment of the ‘tone’ of a company’s entire hiring process, Textio examines the organizational output with an emphasis on improvement.

They deliver a toolset that allows your organization to speak with one voice while improving the quality of the impact of that voice.

Why This Matters

Textio is a tool for learning about the fact that what you say may not mean what you think it does. This aspect of communications is widely understood in theory but rarely applied well. The problem is that it’s hard to actually understand the impact of what you say.

By providing the equivalent of a digital mirror, the company gives its users feedback that allows them to adjust their language before communicating. It highlights word choices and recommends alternatives based on their impact on the intended audience. This is a singularly interesting way to deliver transformational change inside of an organization.

By making employees more conscious of their impact on others and by giving direct usable choices, Textio teaches new behavior by doing. This aspect of individual change is unique to Textio as far as we can tell. It’s an ongoing training process that rewards individual employees (through gamification of the interface) for behavior and communications that increase organizational effectiveness.
